How much is normal?

Our culture views sex as "dirty" even "sinful". This may be the reason you feel shame about being a sexual being. It is normal to spend a lot of time exploring your sexuality through sex, masturbation and watching porn.

  • Masturbating every day is normal

  • Watching porn every day is normal

  • Having sex every day is normal

The question is your attitude towards sex.

Is too much sex real ?

Many call it sex addiction. Not recognised in the DSM-5 but sex addiction has real consequences on relationships & well-being.

Having a lot of sex, watching a lot of porn, masturbate a lot is not sex addiction but not being able to control it or stop it is.

Are you using it as a form of self-harm or to escape? Enjoying sex is not sex addiction but using sex as a form of escape is.

When is too much ?

You have an intense urge to masturbate all the time, skipping school and work so you can stay home and masturbate. Locking yourself in the office bathroom to masturbate, risking professional relationships, interfering with your daily life.

If you enjoy frequent masturbation but you know when to stop and are able to stop it and masturbation is not causing distress in your life, you are not addicted to it.

Same applies to sex and porn.

How much sex is too much sex?

So, back to the question. Too much is when:

  • sex dominates your life to the exclusion of other activities

  • have a constant urge for sex while feeling regret, anxiety, depression, shame

  • having extramarital affairs, cheating

  • using sex as a temporary escape

  • watching porn, masturbate, have sex, even when you want to stop it

Seek help when

  • you are harming yourself and others

  • you cannot control/stop it

  • you are lying to cover this behaviour

  • you do it despite serious consequences

  • it causes you severe distress

  • it interferes with daily life, productivity, work performance, relationship, and your mental health

Seek help when you think you need help. It is not weak to ask for help, it is a strength and courage to get out of difficult situations.

How to help myself?

Pretending to keep it under control is not helping yourself. Lying is a choice and you must decide to be honest about your addiction in order to help yourself.

  • admit there is a problem

  • accept yourself

  • know that you are not alone

  • reach out for support group

  • seek professional therapy
